SAP Analytics Cloud: Enabling Business and its Users in a Matter of Weeks

In 2017, Borchers, a leading specialty chemical additives business, was acquired by a private equity firm and was presented with a real challenge: find a new application landscape and business intelligence/analytics platform—fast. They had less than six months to move off the previous owner’s legacy applications and BI/analytics landscape to the new one, as well as have it deliver critical BI reporting and business user self-service capabilities.

Learn how Borchers made their platform choice and successfully transitioned ahead of their tight schedule. Experience how they are using SAP Analytics Cloud, SAP Cloud Platform, SAP HANA and other applications to provide use cases for sales invoicing, financial, accounts payable and accounts receivable aging, sales opportunity analysis and cost center reporting across the organization. Hear how business users are leveraging the easy to use self-service capabilities of SAP Analytics Cloud to create their own stories and reporting.

  • Easy integration of data from multiple sources into consistent data models that are used across the business

How Crocs Is Rockin’ BI Releases: A Journey to Scrum and Kanban

By late 2015, Crocs had successfully implemented a new SAP Apparel and Footwear Solution system globally, hyper-care was wrapped up and the requests for BI reports and data were growing. What started as a trickle during the transitional reporting phase rapidly grew into a flood from all directions. Something had to be done and the direction was simple: make it happen now. We began the search by trial for a BI release methodology to fit the young and fast changing Crocs culture.

For the past two years, we have used a blend of Scrum and Kanban methods to deliver short BI releases, resulting in continuous delivery of working solutions and visibility of work in process. The methodology has enabled enough structure for compliance and enough flexibility to embrace change. The journey is still a work in progress—as any Agile endeavor should be—but there are lessons to learn in Crocs’ journey so far and the unique path taken to get here.

Key Business Benefits:

  • Continuous predictable delivery

  • Ability to embrace change without harm to the budget or team

  • Improved visibility of work

Journey from Descriptive Analytics to Predictive Analytics

With the flood of data available, businesses today are more interested in knowing what could happen. Companies with huge data sets can prepare analytics, but they sometimes have trouble answering questions about how and where to start. How can you identify what types of analytics are appropriate for your organization?

For solving this puzzle, Benjamin Moore has been using tools like SAP BusinessObjects 4.2 and SAP BW 7.4 to extract meanings from the huge amount of data that has helped in improving the decision-making at the company level. The analytics effort within the company just didn’t stop with descriptive analytics—steps are now being taken to drive the predictive analytics initiative for insight into the future.

How Callaway Golf Innovates Production Performance Through Plant Maintenance Reporting in SAP BI

Callaway Golf is the world’s largest producer of golf clubs and is heavily reliant on manufacturing quality products. This session will focus on how Callaway used Business Intelligence (BI) tools such as real-time SAP HANA, SAP BusinessObjects BI reporting, and dashboards to identify and prevent critical defects on the production floor. With different SAP time zones, SAP BusinessObjects session time-out issues, and factory calendar days, it was challenging to discover a robust and simple-to-use solution. The SAP HANA calculation views tracked the data in real-time, which was most critical for business requirements. SAP BusinessObjects BI reporting provided previously unheard insightful details such as the notifications completed and delegated per day, top five reasons for equipment failure, etc. A dashboard running 24/7—based on Lumira designer edition—displays the pending notifications requiring attention.

Our innovative approach of real-time reporting combined with self-service BI presented the best of both worlds to the business, achieving outstanding sales growth while simultaneously significantly reducing production scrap.

Key Business Benefits:

  • Increase in production quantities resulting in better sales

  • Minimized wastage so most of products are better utilized

  • Self-service BI provided supervisors the ability to track work load of their employees

UF Health’s Successful Adoption of Interactive Drillable Dashboards

The University of Florida Shands Hospital (UF Health) began its analytical journey developing reports sent via email, but with the growing demand of customized reports, they decided to begin developing highly interactive dashboards in SAP® BusinessObjects™ Web Intelligence® that not only enhanced data delivery but improved hospital rankings. In early 2016, UF Health began an initiative that focused on evaluating quality of care provided by UF Health in meeting its mission to provide the highest quality of clinical care.

Foreseeing an increase in data requests, UF Health began developing an all-encompassing self-service dashboard in Web Intelligence® that would satisfy requirements of 12 teams. Each team defined the scope of their specific focus area, identified measurable objectives necessary to achieve the desired outcome, and listed the required metric data necessary to benchmark and monitor progress. The result was an interactive dashboard containing KPIs addressing the metrics in the form of tiles, charts, and graphs with the ability to slice and dice data on numerous dimensions (e.g., department, division, doctor, patient type, payer, etc.) The dashboard is refreshed daily and presents the past two years of monthly trending data.

With a 50,000-foot view of the hospital’s performance, users can easily monitor the overall direction of the most important KPIs and quickly drill down to the encounter level. The dashboard has been very successful with its ability to be incorporated in EPIC Hyperspace and supports integration with Web Intelligence® documents. This integration enabled users to view, interact, and take action on Web Intelligence® documents without needing to access a stand-alone web browser or sign-on separately.

Key Business Benefits:

  • Increased efficiency and effectiveness: reduction in length of stay, mortality, and re-admissions

  • Improved patient safety

How are LEGOs and a BI Self-Service Program Related?

Just as LEGOs come in many sizes, shapes, and colors. Some with plans. Some without. A self-service business intelligence program is built one piece at a time. There is the foundation. The structure. The design. The appearance. How well it works with unrelated or conventional components. The desire is the same: to have people engage the tools. In the case of the LEGOs, to have fun and be creative. In the case of business intelligence, to explore new ideas and present data in new and different ways. Learn how C Spire built and grows its self-service program and learn about the importance of the data model design, tool selection, and training.

USPI’s Self-Service “Enterprise BI” Portal

United Surgical Partners International (USPI) was looking to move away from a “push” reporting model to building out a custom enterprise business intelligence portal where all end users can log in to see their reports and interactive dashboards that they need to run their business. Utilizing SAP® BusinessObjects™ BI Launch Pad was the “out-of-the-box” solution, but it would require each end user to consume a BusinessObjects™ license to access their reports and dashboards. USPI decided to build an enterprise reporting portal that did not require every user to log into BusinessObjects™ and that leverages Active Directory to allow for a secure single sign-on into this home-grown portal. However, this portal also needed to provide end users the capability to create ad-hoc queries and utilize dashboards that could write back inputted data to a database. Attend this session to find out how USPI made this vision a reality.

Key Business Benefits:

  • USPI saved on software licensing by sending our end users to a home-grown portal.

  • USPI is in full control of the layout and any enhancements or modifications needed to the enterprise reporting portal.

  • Can have an unlimited number of users access this portal, no restrictions. It is a very lightweight application.

How Leprino Foods is Creating Cost-Effective, Near-Real-Time Reporting Dashboards within SAP

In 2016, Leprino Foods, (a traditionally B2B company) planned to launch its first e-commerce site, ascentprotein.com. Understandably, management desired real-time reporting, which was met with some challenges. As a startup, reporting requirements would change frequently and reporting needed to be easy to read and understand. With SAP as the system of record and resources limited, Leprino leadership decided to consider custom-purchased solutions. In this session, you will hear how the company created a very visible, easy-to-read company dashboard reporting tool which required little time, resources, and programming and with little ongoing maintenance—a simple, business-driven, cost-effective, and supportable solution.

Empowering Managers with Self-Service, Real-Time Financial Reports

The merger of seven councils within Auckland led to the formation of the largest council in the Southern Hemisphere, serving a population of 1.5 million. A major challenge for this new council was delivering reporting to around 1,000 managers working in very diverse areas—from park rangers to IT project managers, engineers, and building inspectors.

Initially, reporting was delivered via static paper reports monthly which had several issues, including no real-time view, no ability to drill down and analyze data, inability to import data into other systems, and there was no way to prevent overspending prior to or as it occurred.

In this presentation, Dan will walk attendees through how Auckland Council advanced and achieved real-time reporting and dashboards with drill-down analysis using SAP® BusinessObjects™.

Key Business Benefits:

  • Financial information nearly in real time delivered to managers' desktops

  • More detailed information than available before, allowing better analysis and decision-making

  • Reduction in need for financial advisors to provide the information

IT: Ally, Adversary, or Something Entirely Different

Finance is no longer a world where we get to sit in our offices and define black-and-white rules and expectations, where the dictatorship of our financial realm is followed, and the support of other departments are not needed. Strong finance teams now need to be supported by equally strong operating, HR, and—even more importantly—IT teams. Aligning visions and needs with an IT team in creating the exact technology environment needed is by far one of the most beneficial relationships that can be forged.

In this session, we will discuss how truJsting and respecting the expertise of one another is not always an easy feat, but once it has been accomplished both teams lead to extraordinary results and efficiencies.

Key Business Benefits:

  • Technology that is within budget and increases efficiency

  • Successful implementation

  • Collaborative approach increases understanding

Process Improvement with SAP Agile Data Preparation

L3 Technologies successfully improved their internal process by using the SAP Agile Data Preparation tool. The scope of the project was to maintain and manipulate a worksheet received from an outside marketing company in Microsoft Excel format with 116 columns and over 150,000 records. L3 Technologies provided SAP Agile Data Preparation (ADP) tool with business users and loaded the base file received from the marketing company.

Users are exploring the tool and it will help to improve users to be able to add new columns/formulae quickly and encourage collaboration within the team. We were able to save time with performance improvement while working on the worksheet and load into database for dashboard consumption that will be consumed by executives.

In addition, a SAP Analytics Cloud user creates KPIs in a dashboard and maintains a KPI data dictionary as an additional tab in stories. All data is sourced from HANA. The user shares the data dictionary with IT to load into SAP HANA. With the SAP ADP tool, the user will be able to modify the data dictionary and save it to HANA data base table directly without help from the IT department. L3 Technologies is now able to maintain a data dictionary of KPIs.

Key business benefits:

  • Team collaboration

  • Process improvement and increased efficiency

  • Reduce dependency on IT team

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly on Planning for an SAP Analytics Cloud Deployment

Milliken Corporation has selected SAP Analytics Cloud as its business intelligence enterprise platform to replace its former Microsoft-based business intelligence solution. Though it knew that SAP Analytics Cloud was undergoing rapid changes, it selected the product given SAP’s focus and investment into innovating the product. Milliken made the decision to execute a phase zero initiative to strategically plan how the tool can shift the business intelligence paradigm but to also identify key capabilities or lack thereof to lay out its implementation road map. This exercise provided insight to many undocumented considerations, discovered opportunities to innovation, and discovered challenges that would either have to be accounted for in its implementation or as feedback to SAP in its road map. This session will highlight many of these learnings that can help a company avoid surprises as it rolls out SAP Analytics Cloud.

Key Business Benefits:

  • Modernization of its approach to business intelligence

  • Better-informed feedback to SAP on the product

  • Ability to use design thinking as an enabler for the business to define its insight to action needs

Making the Right Connections with SAP Analytics Cloud

When beginning the journey into SAP Analytics Cloud, it is critical to know what data connection options are available. SAP Analytics Cloud provides live data connections natively to several SAP data sources, as well as import connections to a variety of on-premise data sources, but will these connections provide access to all the data you need to build your SAP Analytics Cloud stories?

In this session, we will explore the differences between the acquired data and live data connectivity options included with the cloud, look at the APOS Live Data Gateway for expanded data connectivity options, and consider factors for defining which data connection approach will work best for your organization’s deployment scenario. Connectrac will share their experiences of implementing SAP Analytics Cloud and how they use the APOS Live Data Gateway solution to meet their data connectivity needs. We will demonstrate how the APOS Live Data Gateway provides a unified semantic layer for SAP Analytics Cloud, SAP Lumira®, and SAP Analysis for Microsoft Office, and how this solution can be used to provide expanded data connectivity options.

Key Business Benefits:

  • Understand the data connectivity options available to you.

  • Assess the types of data connections available and decision factors for your organization's needs.

  • Learn how to simplify and streamline your adoption of SAP Analytics Cloud by leveraging your existing data sources.
